People had been speculating since the dawn of crypto when the world’s largest online marketplaces, the ones of the Amazon caliber like eBay, Etsy or AliExpress, and, well, Amazon itself, would start to accept cryptocurrencies. There were a slew of rumors, opinions, and theories thickly interspersed with false reports popping up here and there of Amazon and its little cousins being on the verge of embracing cryptocurrencies. On top of that, someone has actually posted a petition on change.org to add Ether to Amazon as a payment method.

Long story short, that was a waste of time. High hopes fell flat, and people lost religion. But not all. As the common wisdom goes, when hope dies, action begins. This exposition describes one such effort which tries to bring to fruition the idea of a decentralized marketplace for trading goods and services. And as you might have already figured it out, with a cryptocurrency as a means of payment. So let’s welcome Particl Marketplace and see what it has to offer – and what Amazon has missed.

What is it, in simple words?

Particl Marketplace is an online marketplace where you can trade goods and services. Not a big deal, you may think. However, what distinguishes it from places like Amazon as well as cryptocurrency-enabled marketplaces is the decentralized nature of purchases on Particl. You can think of it as a variety of a decentralized cryptocurrency exchange (aka DEX) where trades are being conducted on-chain. But in case of Particl, it is goods and services that are being traded, not fiat or crypto, with deals on-chain as well, fully encrypted and decentralized.
Particl is a global peer-to-peer privacy-centered marketplace that uses an automated two-party escrow system. It is crypto-agnostic and designed to work with any cryptocurrency, creating a secure, highly-scalable environment supported by a privacy-focused blockchain-based platform. The team behind the project sees its mission in developing “a new decentralized, private and democratic economy” that is governed by the network of its users, with no central authority or middleman getting in the way.
In the project developers’ own words, Particl enables everyone to participate in a free, anonymous exchange of all kinds of goods, without paying any fee and regardless of geographical location. To be sure, you are already thinking about Silk Road and its dark fate, and that the government is going to crack down monumentally on Particl one day. Well, the outcome may vary as the payments on the platform are made using its own cryptocurrency PART, with its laser focus on privacy and anonymity. But more on this later.

How did it grow up?

The development of the Particl project started in early 2017 with the release of the white paper describing the team’s vision for the marketplace, which was shortly followed by a successful seed funding that brought in enough funds ($750,000) to support the development of the project for a year (it turned out sufficient to last for over two years).
These donations helped to establish the Particl Foundation, a non-profit Swiss organization with the goal of providing legal protection for the project to ensure its sustained development and compliance with government regulations. It receives 10% of all the staking rewards generated on the Particl network, making the project self-sustainable and free for most uses.
Unlike other such projects in the crypto arena, Particl has been using its own blockchain from day one, which happened to be July 17, 2017. It was specifically designed to be crypto agnostic by supporting and working with any cryptocurrency. Additionally, it supported the smart contract tech out of the box, giving users an ability to build all kinds of decentralized applications (dApps) that can be directly integrated into the Particl marketplace.
On May 31, 2018, the Particl Marketplace, the Holy Grail of the entire endeavor, was made available for alpha testing on the testnet of the project, which later split into development and stable branches. It went live with the mainnet release of the Particl Open Marketplace on August 12, 2019, which featured Particl Desktop 2.0.0, a client-side application providing user interface and built-in wallet functions.
On November 25, 2019, the Particl Desktop 2.3.0 client was released that enabled Bitcoin payments and marked the introduction of untraceable transactions. With the help of the new in-wallet exchange module, everyone can easily swap their bitcoins for the native PART coin. Moreover, the module allows seamless integration of third-party accountless exchange services right into the marketplace, with StealthEX being one of them.

How is it different from other marketplaces?

The common solution many P2P marketplaces implement to protect buyers and sellers from the other party failing to honor their end of the bargain is through third-party escrow, where the “third-party” in the majority of places and cases is the platform itself that the market participants must mutually trust. In short, it is a single point of failure. And the selling (pardon the pun) point of the entire Particl’s marketplace is its decentralized escrow, which is a thing entirely between the two parties engaged. No middlemen allowed here!
And these are not empty words. Particl implements the concept best known as Mutually Assured Destruction (aptly shortened as MAD), a military doctrine you are certainly familiar with, and probably even afraid of, that consists in a mutual destruction of two belligerent parties in an all-out nuclear holocaust. If you are curious, the idea stems from the game theory and has a lot to do with the Nash Equilibrium, of John Nash’s fame. In a nutshell, Particl removes the need for a trusted escrow agent by introducing MAD escrow smart contracts.
A MAD escrow contract allows to lock funds in a multi-signature address that can be released only if all the parties sign off on the transaction. So both the seller and the buyer lock in the contract an agreed amount for a specified period of time, with the buyer also depositing the payment for the items purchased. The escrowed funds are released when both parties confirm the fulfillment of the agreement. Should one party break the terms, the funds remain locked for good causing a mutual financial loss until both parties agree to sign off.
Another crucial aspect of Particl Marketplace is its end-to-end privacy. The problem with conventional marketplaces acting as an escrow agent is that the communication between the parties should be open to the agent for it to serve as an arbitrator. With Particl, it is no longer required, and all messages between the buyer and the seller are encrypted. Despite being public, only their recipient can decrypt them, which effectively makes messages untraceable.
This is also where the PART coin turns up quite handy. It enables three different privacy modes, and with the most secure mode, the Anon mode, PART transactions utilize the RingCT privacy protocol, which hides both the amount transferred and the identity of the parties transacting. Accordingly, every part of the entire Particl trading environment is thoroughly decentralized, and the full anonymity of market participants is maintained at all times, making the platform a completely trustless marketplace. Big Brother is no longer watching you.
Aside from that, you can stake PART and generate a source of passive income for yourself. Particl uses a custom Proof-of-Stake consensus protocol, allowing you to get a piece of the pie in the form of new coins created at each block according to the scheduled inflation process. The annual inflation rate is initially set to 5% and goes down 1 percentage point every year until it finally floors at 2% indefinitely. Moreover, these rates are a bare minimum as they assume that all PART coins have been staked. Otherwise, the income will be bigger and better as the same rewards are paid to fewer coins.
Additionally, your passive income through staking PART will be augmented by the fees generated through the everyday marketplace operations. Whether it is network fees collected via PART transactions or marketplace listing fees paid by the sellers, all of them contribute to the stakers’ rewards. At the end of the day, staking PART can turn into a profitable business once the Particl platform starts to attract more traffic. In simple words, the more popular the market gets, the more fees it generates, the more coins the stakers earn.
As PART is a standalone cryptocurrency, it can be used outside Particl Marketplace as well. So if you plan on using it for purposes other than eCommerce, it is traded on several exchanges, for example, HitBTC and Bittrex, with more exchanges to list PART in the future. There are native Particl wallets available for storing PART such as Particl Qt with Ledger support, Particl-cli, and Particl Copay Wallet, with the latter available for both the desktop and the mobile. There is also a third-party multicurrency Flare Wallet, enabling cold staking for Particl.
Running Particl is a collective effort, which means no operational costs and no company bagging profits from it. The marketplace buyers don’t pay any commissions other than tiny network confirmation fees, while the sellers are only charged a small listing fee to keep spam listings to a minimum. This creates a highly competitive environment, with the sellers making more profits and the buyers having access to cheaper goods and services as a result.

What’s in the pipeline?

The next major release of the Particl Marketplace should have been Particl Desktop 2.4.0, but it was later rebranded as Particl Desktop 3.0 to reflect its breakthrough nature. It is set for release in the second half of 2020 and will enable the addition of user-created markets and storefronts, effectively turning the Particl marketplace into a network of specialized markets.
And if you think about it, that makes perfect sense. Say, you have a social network account highly merited and full of karma that you want to sell, whatever your reasons might be. Then creating a dedicated market for trading such accounts privately and securely may look extremely appealing to you. Whether it is the right thing to do is another matter, of course.
Kidding aside, it is obviously not about selling or offering something that the society on the whole doesn’t approve of or frowns upon. If you are a freelancer, for example, a graphics designer or a translator, you would be certainly interested in the future freelancer markets – along with your potential employers. Put simply, birds of a feather should flock together.
To keep things in perspective, popular freelancer markets that exist today charge up to 10-20% of what you would get from your client if you negotiated directly. All in all, establishing communities across the marketplace seems to be the next logical step in the natural evolution and growth of the platform. In fact, it is a little surprising that the Particl team didn’t come up with this idea earlier.

Secure paper wallet tutorial

This is my handout for paranoid people who want a way to store bitcoin safely. It requires a little work, but this is the method I use because it should be resistant to risks associated with:
  1. Bad random number generators
  2. Malicious or flawed software
  3. Hacked computers
If you want a method that is less secure but easier, skip to the bottom of this post.
The Secure Method
  1. Download bitaddress.org. (Try going to the website and pressing "ctrl+s")
  2. Put the bitaddress.org file on a computer with an operating system that has not interacted with the internet much or at all. The computer should not be hooked up to the internet when you do this. You could put the bitaddress file on a USB stick, and then turn off your computer, unplug the internet, and boot it up using a boot-from-CD copy of linux (Ubuntu or Mint for example). This prevents any mal-ware you may have accumulated from running and capturing your keystrokes. I use an old android smart phone that I have done a factory reset on. It has no sim-card and does not have the password to my home wifi. Also the phone wifi is turned off. If you are using a fresh operating system, and do not have a connection to the internet, then your private key will probably not escape the computer.
  3. Roll a die 62 times and write down the sequence of numbers. This gives you 2160 possible outcomes, which is the maximum that Bitcoin supports.
  4. Run bitaddress.org from your offline computer. Input the sequence of numbers from the die rolls into the "Brain Wallet" tab. By providing your own source of randomness, you do not have to worry that the random number generator used by your computer is too weak. I'm looking at you, NSA ಠ_ಠ
  5. Brain Wallet tab creates a private key and address.
  6. Write down the address and private key by hand or print them on a dumb printer. (Dumb printer means not the one at your office with the hard drive. Maybe not the 4 in 1 printer that scans and faxes and makes waffles.) If you hand copy them you may want to hand copy more than one format. (WIF and HEX). If you are crazy and are storing your life savings in Bitcoin, and you hand copy the private key, do a double-check by typing the private key back into the tool on the "Wallet Details" tab and confirm that it recreates the same public address.
  7. Load your paper wallet by sending your bitcoin to the public address. You can do this as many times as you like.
  8. You can view the current balance of your paper wallet by typing the public address into the search box at blockchain.info
  9. If you are using an old cell phone or tablet do a factory reset when you are finished so that the memory of the private keys is destroyed. If you are using a computer with a boot-from-CD copy of linux, I think you can just power down the computer and the private keys will be gone. (Maybe someone can confirm for me that the private keys would not be able to be cached by bitaddress?)
  10. To spend your paper wallet, you will need to either create an offline transaction, or import the private key into a hot wallet. Creating an offline transaction is dangerous if you don't know what you are doing. Importing to a client side wallet like Bitcoin-Qt, Electrum, MultiBit or Armory is a good idea. You can also import to an online wallet such as Blockchain.info or Coinbase.
Trusting bitaddress.org
The only thing you need bitaddress.org to do is to honestly convert the brainwallet passphrase into the corresponding private key and address. You can verify that it is doing this honestly by running several test passphrases through the copy of bitaddress that you plan on using, and several other brainwallet generators. For example, you could use the online version of bitaddress, and brainwallet and safepaperwallet and bitcoinpaperwallet. If you are fancy with the linux command line, you can also try "echo -n my_die_rolls | sha256sum". The linux operating system should reply with the same private key that bitaddress makes. This protects you from a malicious paper wallet generator.
Trusting your copy of bitaddress.org
Bitaddress publishes the sha1 hash of the bitaddress.org website at this location:

With this fingerprint, you can authenticate the signed message, which gives you the hash of the current bitaddress.org file. Then you can hash your copy of the file and authenticate the file.
I do not have a way to authenticate the fingerprint itself, sorry. According to the website I linked to, git has cryptographic traceability that would enable a person to do some research and authenticate the fingerprint. If you want to go that far, knock yourself out. I think that the techniques described in this document do not really rely on bitaddress being un-corrupt. Anyway, how do we know pointbiz is a good guy? ;-)
There are a lot of skilled eyes watching bitaddress.org and the signed sha1 hash. To gain the most benefit from all of those eyes, it's probably worthwhile to check your copy by hashing it and comparing to the published hash.
"But we aren't supposed to use brainwallets"
You are not supposed to use brainwallets that have predictable passphrases. People think they are pretty clever about how they pick their passphrases, but a lot of bitcoins have been stolen because people tend to come up with similar ideas. If you let dice generate the passphrase, then it is totally random, and you just need to make sure to roll enough times.
How to avoid spending your life rolling dice
When I first started doing this, I rolled a die 62 times for each private key. This is not necessary. You can simply roll the die 62 times and keep the sequence of 62 numbers as a "seed". The first paper address you create would use "my die rolls-1" as the passphrase, the second would be "my die rolls-2" and so on. This is safe because SHA256 prevents any computable relationship between the resulting private key family.
Of course this has a certain bad security scenario -- if anyone obtains the seed they can reconstruct all of your paper wallets. So this is not for everyone! On the other hand, it also means that if you happen to lose one of your paper wallets, you could reconstruct it so long as you still had the seed.
One way to reduce this risk is to add an easy to remember password like this: "my die rolls-password-1".
If you prefer, you can use a technique called diceware to convert your die rolls to words that still contain the same quantity of entropy, but which could be easier to work with. I don't use diceware because it's another piece of software that I have to trust, and I'm just copy/pasting my high entropy seed, so I don't care about how ugly it is.
Why not input the dice as a Base 6 private key on the Wallet Details tab?
Two reasons. First of all, this option requires that you roll the die 99 times, but you do not get meaningful additional protection by rolling more than 62 times. Why roll more times if you don't have to? Second, I use the "high entropy seed" method to generate multiple private keys from the same die rolls. Using the Base 6 option would require rolling 99 times for every private key.
I'm a big nerd with exotic dice. How many times to roll?
Put this formula in Excel to get the number of times to roll: "=160*LOG(2,f)" where f = number of faces on the die. For example, you would roll a d16 40 times. By the way, somewhat unbelievably casino dice are more fair than ordinary dice
The "Change address" problem:
You should understand change addresses because some people have accidentally lost money by not understanding it.
Imagine your paper wallet is a 10 dollar bill. You use it to buy a candy bar. To do this you give the cashier the entire 10 dollar bill. They keep 1 dollar and give you 9 dollars back as change.
With Bitcoin, you have to explicitly say that you want 9 dollars back, and you have to provide an address where it should go to. If you just hand over the 10 dollar bill, and don't say you want 9 dollars back, then the miner who processes the transaction gives 1 dollar to the store and keeps the remainder themselves.
Wallet software like Bitcoin-Qt handles this automatically for you. They automatically make "change addresses" and they automatically construct transactions that make the change go to the change address.
There are three ways I know of that the change problem can bite you:
  1. You generate a raw transaction by hand, and screw up. If you are generating a transaction "by hand" with a raw transaction editor, you need to be extra careful that your outputs add up to the same number as your inputs. Otherwise, the very lucky miner who puts your transaction in a block will keep the difference.
  2. You import a paper wallet into a wallet software and spend part of it, and then think that the change is in the paper wallet. The change is not in the paper wallet. It is in a change address that the wallet software generated. That means that if you lose your wallet.dat file you will lose all the change. The paper wallet is empty.
  3. You import a paper wallet into a wallet software and spend part of it, and then think that the change is in the change address that the wallet software generated. If the transaction did not need to consume all of the "outputs" used to fund the paper wallet, then there could be some unspent outputs still located at the address of the paper wallet. If you destroyed the paper wallet, and destroyed the copy of the private key imported to the wallet software, then you could not access this money. (E.g. if you restored the software wallet from its seed, thinking all of the money was moved to the wallet-generated change addresses.)

The hot paper wallet problem
Your bitcoin in your paper wallet are secure, so long as the piece of paper is secure, until you go to spend it. When you spend it, you put the private key onto a computer that is connected to the internet. At this point you must regard your paper wallet address as hot because the computer you used may have been compromised. It now provides much less protection against theft of your coins. If you need the level of protection that a cold paper wallet provides, you need to create a new one and send your coins to it.
Destroying your paper wallet address
Do not destroy the only copy of a private key without verifying that there is no money at that address. Your client may have sent change to your paper wallet address without you realizing it. Your client may have not consumed all of the unspent outputs available at the paper wallet address. You can go to blockchain.info and type the public address into the search window to see the current balance. I don't bother destroying my used/empty paper wallet addresses. I just file them away.
Encrypting your private key
BIP 0038 describes a standardized way to encrypt your paper wallet private key. A normal paper wallet is vulnerable because if anyone sees the private key they can take the coins. The BIP38 protocol is even resistant to brute force attacks because it uses a memory intensive encryption algorithm called scrypt. If you want to encrypt your wallets using BIP38, I recommend that you use bitcoinpaperwallet because they will let you type in your own private key and will encrypt it for you. As with bitaddress, for high security you should only use a local copy of this website on a computer that will never get connected to the internet.
Splitting your private key
Another option for protecting the private key is to convert it into multiple fragments that must be brought together. This method allows you to store pieces of your key with separate people in separate locations. It can be set up so that you can reconstitute the private key when you have any 2 out of the 3 fragments. This technique is called Shamir's Secret Sharing. I have not tried this technique, but you may find it valuable. You could try using this website http://passguardian.com/ which will help you split up a key. As before, you should do this on an offline computer. Keep in mind if you use this service that you are trusting it to work properly. It would be good to find other independently created tools that could be used to validate the operation of passguardian. Personally, I would be nervous destroying the only copy of a private key and relying entirely on the fragments generated by the website.
Looks like Bitaddress has an implementation of Shamir's Secret Sharing now under the "Split Wallet" tab. However it would appear that you cannot provide your own key for this, so you would have to trust bitaddress.
Durable Media
Pay attention to the media you use to record your paper wallet. Some kinds of ink fade, some kinds of paper disintegrate. Moisture and heat are your enemies.
In addition to keeping copies of my paper wallet addresses I did the following:
  1. Order a set of numeric metal stamps. ($10)
  2. Buy a square galvanized steel outlet cover from the hardware store ($1)
  3. Buy a sledgehammer from the hardware store
  4. Write the die rolls on the steel plate using a sharpie
  5. Use the hammer to stamp the metal. Do all the 1's, then all the 2's etc. Please use eye protection, as metal stamp may emit sparks or fly unexpectedly across the garage. :-)
  6. Use nail polish remover to erase the sharpie
Electrum
If you trust electrum you might try running it on an offline computer, and having it generate a series of private keys from a seed. I don't have experience with this software, but it sounds like there are some slick possibilities there that could save you time if you are working with a lot of addresses.

Where are we as far as the mainnet release?

we are waiting for Particl foundation to be approved. Paperwork is in Swiss regulator's hands and we're waiting for them to approve so they can oversee us create PART tokens and distribute PART tokens

Did they say anything as far as when they will approve like an approximate date or just when they get to it?

once foundation is formed we'll use a couple days to do final prep for mainnet setup and then release the clients, source and tokens

and you guys are 100% sure they will approve and is just a matter or time?? Are you guys sure of the Swiss foundation approval, that they will approve?

our legal counsel is Swiss based and have been through this process before so we're trusting they have all the right docs to get the job done. We were only told it takes 2 weeks to receive the answer once they have paperwork

Since Micah seems not to be present, is he still part of the team?

micah is still a member of the team as an adviser. he has and will continue to contribute to the Particl project. On top of that, his fiance just said yes, so he's pretty busy

Can I ask how much did you guys raise and currently holdings you have (mainly asking if you have enough for years to come) ?

the team has raised 591 btc and roughly 250k particl. this will last the team for an expected 9 months, which is more than what we need to come up with a working marketplace. there will be a 2nd crowdfunding early next year and we will be expecting particl to be self funding after that.

What is particl

to put it simply, Particl will be an anonymous, crypto-agnostic marketplace. this will be a self-governed decentralized system

Hey Particl team, can you comment on whether or not the fact that it's taking the Swiss Regulator so long to approve has anything to do with any problems that have surfaced, and if so, what those problems are, or is it typical for it to take this long?

Hi there team at Particl, will the GUI be released alongside mainnet?

we have started testing the GUI internally. There will be a testnet with the GUI prior to mainnet

Who do you see as your biggest competitor in blockchain and in traditional sense of the way atm?

there have been markets around for a while. We are focusing on anonymity and decentralized governance.
Particl in it's current state is a privacy platform, so we would be in competition with privacy coins. We are testing Confidential Transactions and RingCT on our TESTNET3 atm. Monero is the only other currency using RingCT and only a view others are using CT. Particl is the first to use this tech on Bitcoin codebase. We also have a decentralized voting mechanism so projects like Decred who are excelling at governance are projects we would also be similar too.
Once our market is out we'd have competition from other decentralized marketplaces like bitbay, OpenBazaar, Syscoin's blockmarket and a couple ethereum projects in early phases of development. We'd also be competing against ecommerce sites on clearnet that are strictly centralized models.
The cool thing with the market is it'll be crypto-agnostic so no crypto would be competition. OB also will offer a crypto-agnostic market and I don't recall if Syscoin's does at this time.

So if it's crypto agnostic where does the value of PART come from?

what's good about particl is that buyers can pay in whatever coin they want, provided it's available in shapeshift. it will automatically be converted to particl. it will be the receiver's choice to sell, hold or stake particl

When can we expect a working beta of the marketplace? Is the team focused on developing a mobile app version that can do staking on a mobile platform as well?

In terms of our timeline, we anticpate the beta to be out mid October, that's without the reputation system.
we intend to have the reputation system in place towards the end of October, at the same time we will have the protocols and codebase audited

Long time supporter for Shadowcash/Particl since the early days. The biggest gripe I have with the transparency and delays between the team and the community/supporters/investors. This has stemmed from the Shadowcash days - do you have any plans to change the way you address any delays? NB. Nothing against your team, I love the work produced - as a long term supporter I would like to see a company take a more proactive approach to issues that have stemmed in the past and not release hype/release dates until 100% certain.

Can you explain your exchange mechanism somewhat? What exactly takes place in the background? Explain the client server side of that token being exchanged to the customer receiving that different coin

Hi there, long-term supporter. I bought SDC back in February of 2015 and have been following the project closely the whole time. One thing I have a problem with is that you have announced the marketplace launch a number of times. For the first half of 2015 you continually said that it would be ready by the end of the year, then the same message was communicated in 2016. The constant missed deadlines have caused me concern, and now I'm still not sure what to believe about the market launch. So why now should we believe in the October date?

back then we barely had a functioning team. In 2015 the SDC team pretty much fell apart. Funding dried up and there was no real teamwork.. People work working on what they wanted to work on, and there were constantly issues arising that would take priority over the MP. Particl has a team now, as well as funding, a project manager, and we are busy growing.
there have been governance issues that have arisen that have delayed the project but now there is a dedicated team of 15 people of which 10 are working full time

How will you approach sellers to use particl market?

there are a lot of upsides for sellers to use particl market. less paper works, tax breaks (depending on location), more security for seller, not to mention cheaper. we will approach them on more than 1 way. 1 st priority however will be existing crypto sellers

sorry, let me clarify. currently, there are a lot of existing sellers who are also sellers on amazon/ebay etc, also people capitalizing on selling crypto merchandize, these will be our initial users and we'll work on that growth

Particl is being built on the bitcoin core 0.14 codebase. We are building the GUI from the ground up, using Angular (2), and electron. Umbra used QtWebkit, and native html5 + jquery. The UI is new, as well as a way healthier backend inherited from bitcoin core
The main difference is codebase. Umbra was built on bitcoin .08. Particl is built on bitcoin .14. So we'll have native segwit, malleability fixes, increased security, bip65, lightning network readiness.
The privacy is increased as well. Umbra used ring-sigs and Particl is using Confidential Transactions and is testing RingCT.

there certainly are challenges we are expecting like any other team/company, but we believe we are working better than an average team. now that the team is well funded, we can expect faster project and more deadlines to be met. as a matter of fact, the team has already contributed more that 100k lines on github

zedsix Long time supporter for Shadowcash/Particl since the early days. The biggest gripe I have with the transparency and delays between the team and the community/supporters/investors. This has stemmed from the Shadowcash days - do you have any plans to change the way you address any delays? NB. Nothing against your team, I love the work produced - as a long term supporter I would like to see a company take a more proactive approach to issues that have stemmed in the past and not release hype/release dates until 100% certain.

litebit Particl in it's current state is a privacy platform, so we would be in competition with privacy coins. We are testing Confidential Transactions and RingCT on our TESTNET3 atm. Monero is the only other currency using RingCT and only a view others are using CT. Particl is the first to use this tech on Bitcoin codebase. We also have a decentralized voting mechanism so projects like Decred who are excelling at governance are projects we would also be similar too.
Once our market is out we'd have competition from other decentralized marketplaces like bitbay, OpenBazaar, Syscoin's blockmarket and a couple ethereum projects in early phases of development. We'd also be competing against ecommerce sites on clearnet that are strictly centralized models.
The cool thing with the market is it'll be crypto-agnostic so no crypto would be competition. mr_robot I think the concern is that any private market would bypass the community governance and therefor allow any kinds of black market items that could be used to hurt particl's reputation for larger more legitimate things. Ie larger sellers on Amazon wouldn't want to have anything to do with a marketplace that had screenshots of nefarious things being sold... (edited)
dasource I see your point and understand it however let me give you another example ... If you and I use Signal and we decide to trade Cuban Cigars ... you post that on the internet. Should Signal be held liable because they provided a secure means for you to communicate and trade? Particls Private Markets are no different, we are providing a means for people to trade in 100% privacy (anything from cigars to private paintings etc) .. in that environment you cannot govern because it is encrypted for everyone else. Is it possible people may use this for nefarious items? Yes... but it is also possible for that to happen on Signal or any other good encrypted chat platform. Should we stop developing for the good because a few bad actors might use it?

Initially revenue will be made by offering services through Weaver and through the stabilisation mechanism. Even though the majority of Weaver is a free service at this very second, once the rest of the features come online, there will be also a paid account options. In terms of features, Silk contains a decentralised DNS, MultiSig UI and a Watch-Only Address UI for the Qt wallet. Even though it has ToR connectivity, it isn’t aimed as strongly towards anonymity as DarkSilk is, however, we are looking at adding Stealth addresses and our own ring signatures from DarkSilk to Silk.
DarkSilk contains the same features as Silk in terms of the decentralised DNS, MultiSig UI and Watch-Only UI but also has the anonymity features of Sandstorm, Stealth addresses, ToR connectivity and ToR control. Currently we do not have ring signatures within DarkSilk, but this is solely because we want to create our own for both Silk and DarkSilk.

It is likely that you have not heard of the underground team/project Silk Network, nor their ICO for DarkSilk(DSLK) which is due for release on the 5th of November. This is fully understandable as the team doesn’t consist of marketers or promoters, but simply visionaries and visionary developers. The value of Silk Network is apparent once the team, their vision and the work achieved thus far are brought to light.

Fundamental Problem

Investors are naturally cautious, in a high risk environment who dares to make an investment? Compared to company shares, crypto-currencies are like unfilled shares: there is no currency backing. Only when a great level of market maturation has taken place can problems of dried-up markets and high price impact be overcome. All coins, yes even Bitcoin, suffer from the same fundamental problem resulting in illiquidity and high price fluctuations. Silk Network introduces a new way for crypto valuation, by changing the acquisition process it claims to have created a dynamic backing mechanism, ensuring price stability and liquidity. DarkSilk, their flagship product, is best described as a privacy-centric crypto-currency. DarkSilk is the first crypto-currency to be consistently backed by a crypto-asset i.e. Silk; a new codebase/blockchain which offers a swap from the old Silkcoin to Silk. Using the platform Weaver, Silk Network is able to place smart bids based on DarkSilk orders between Silk, DarkSilk & Bitcoin. Silk Network is a continuation of the Silkcoin project which started in 2014. Due to the original Silkcoin having issues with its codebase, it was decided by the development team to create and swap to a new Silkcoin, simply called Silk. Previous investors of Silkcoin have the ability to exchange their old Silkcoin to Silk in Weaver at a 1:1 ratio, DarkSilk will be available in exchange of Silk or Bitcoin at market price. Silk is now traded on the American crypto-currency exchange Bittrex.
Direction and Growth
Initially revenue will be made by offering services through Weaver and through the stabilisation mechanism. Even though the majority of Weaver is a free service at this very second, once the rest of the features come online, there will be also a paid account options. The profitability of their stabilisation method is explained in the online brochure.
They are also launching a development portal named Kowari which will provide a central hub for developers to converse, share ideas, download tools and create new applications utilising both the Silk and DarkSilk blockchains.
Silk Network are also looking to begin talks with an American based private healthcare company about the Silk(SLK) blockchain being used to enable patient identity and record locations services, which is a high value industry and would bring a large amount of value in both price and exposure.
Talk Code
Codebase, they are very similar, but differ in terms of features. They are both based upon 0.11/0.12 Bitcoin, however, Silk has Proof-of-Stake that pays 2SLK per stake reward and there is no Proof-of-Work period, whereas, DarkSilk has no Proof-of-Stake but an unlimited Proof-of-Work period with no block halving and a static reward of 1DSLK per block.
In terms of features, Silk contains a decentralised DNS, MultiSig UI and a Watch-Only Address UI for the Qt wallet. Even though it has ToR connectivity, it isn’t aimed as strongly towards anonymity as DarkSilk is, however, we are looking at adding Stealth addresses and our own ring signatures from DarkSilk to Silk.
DarkSilk contains the same features as Silk in terms of the decentralised DNS, MultiSig UI and Watch-Only UI but also has the anonymity features of Sandstorm, Stealth addresses, ToR connectivity and ToR control. Currently we do not have ring signatures within DarkSilk, but this is solely because we want to create our own for both Silk and DarkSIlk.
This is simply on a codebase/feature level, the key difference between the two coins is how they operate off of each other via the stabilisation mechanism in Weaver, DarkSilk being the currency and Silk the asset/collateral.
ICO
The ICO for DarkSilk(DSLK) has now entered week 2 and the second tier of bonuses (10%). Unlike many ICOs this team has brought everything to the table, including their expenditure to date prior to even releasing a single piece of software. Also, at the end of the ICO(23rd October @ Midnight GMT) the software is released less than two weeks later and payouts to investors take place. FreeSpeechMe-SPECIFIC IMPROVEMENTS WE PLAN TO DO:
Hide nmcontrol/namecoind windows on Windows
GNU/Linux users don't see the terminal windows for backend software; Windows users shouldn't be bothered by them either.
Don't try to visit .bit websites when blockchain isn't downloaded
Right now, visiting a .bit website with an incomplete blockchain will use an older version of that name's data. Usually this results in a failure to load the page with no good explanation of what's wrong, but in certain rare cases it could also hypothetically result in security issues such as hijacking. A better version of FreeSpeechMe should refuse to use incomplete blockchains.
Facilitate non-Firefox usage
FreeSpeechMe uses a networking method, HTTP, which is specific to website traffic. Replacing it with a different method, SOCKS, would make it much more flexible, so you could use Dot-Bit for non-website Internet applications such as SSH. It should also be possible to route other web browsers such as Chromium through FreeSpeechMe. FreeSpeechMe should support being installed as a standalone application for users who don't use Firefox (although obviously Firefox will remain the main method of installation).
Improvements for anonymous browsing
Right now FreeSpeechMe supports routing its traffic through anonymization proxies such as Tor and I2P (if they are installed), but it is not compatible with TorBrowser, so while attackers generally can't see your location or IP address, they can deduce that different activities you do online may have come from the same person. FreeSpeechMe should be improved to function in TorBrowser, which would prevent linkage of different online activities.
Improvements for anonymous hosting
FreeSpeechMe supports Tor and I2P hidden services (if the user has Tor or I2P installed), but does not support Freenet, OnionCat, GarliCat, or other anonymous hosting networks. This should be improved.
Support for next-gen TLS specification
FreeSpeechMe is using a method of specifying certificates to prevent hijacking which is deprecated in the Dot-Bit specification. While this method remains very secure, the newer specification has more features, and FreeSpeechMe should implement it.
HTTPS enforcement
Websites which claim to support HTTPS in their domain record should automatically be loaded in HTTPS, even if the user accidentally forgets the "s", to prevent hijacking in such cases. (Note for geeks: this is like the HSTS specification, but works even for sites you haven't visited before.)
Intelligent Redirecting
Websites that want to support Dot-Bit should be able to do so without changing their server configuration, and instead have FreeSpeechMe make the server think the preexisting domain is being requested. The user would still see the Dot-Bit URL in Firefox, and unlike iframe-based methods, the URL displayed in Firefox would change accordingly as the user clicks links..
Fix HTTP protocol bugs
Unencrypted HTTP Dot-Bit websites occasionally have odd behavior in FreeSpeechMe (sometimes manifesting as links not working properly); this is most frequently seen in WordPress websites. While we strongly encourage the use of HTTPS (which isn't subject to these bugs), we still want to fix the bugs with HTTP websites.
Round-Robin Load Balancing
Some large websites use multiple server IP addresses for a single domain. FreeSpeechMe should be able to randomly choose one.
OTHER NAMECOIN SOFTWARE IMPROVEMENTS
Some of this is possibly out of the scope of this one Indiegogo campaign, depending on funds raised. But these are things we're very interested in helping implement:
Rebase on the latest Bitcoin code
Namecoin is based on an outdated version of Bitcoin (0.3.x). We should rebase on a current release. We inquired with a well-qualified and well-respected contractor (who developed Namecoin-Qt) about how much this rebase would cost; the estimate was around $17,000-$35,000 US. Spending that much on one project would be out of the realm of this first campaign. However, it may be possible to reduce this cost significantly by rebasing on a codebase other than Bitcoin, such as libcoin.
Improve scalability
Namecoin currently requires having the entire blockchain for good security. While the 1.6GB blockchain isn't a large concern right now, future scalability requires that clients be able to securely resolve names without possessing the blockchain. There is a proposal for this called SPV+UTXO.
Automatic renewal of names
Losing your names because you forgot to renew them is a problem.
Names should be able to be renewed automatically. Preferably without decrypting the wallet each time the name is renewed, and maybe without even needing your client to be open when it renews. Any solution must be trust-free.
Cold storage of Namecoin name keys
To update a Namecoin name, the keys must be decrypted on a computer with Internet access; this could be a security risk if malware is installed on that computer. To fix this, cold storage should be used, as is possible with Bitcoin.
This is in two parts: (1) port the Armory client to Namecoin (this allows transactions to be signed offline), and (2) allow a cold-storage name to be used as a revocation key for a hot-wallet name (this is called the "import" field).
Optimize Speed
Dot-Bit is already much faster than other top-level domains for both name lookup and name propagation. However, it can be made even faster.
We estimate that pre-cached name lookup time can be decreased by 2- to 5-fold in some cases, uncached name lookup time can be decreased significantly, name update propagation can be reduced from 40 minutes to under 1 minute, and blockchain sync time can be reduced significantly.
Android support
Namecoin software currently does not support Android; this situation should be improved.
Better blockchain anonymity
Like Bitcoin, Namecoin can keep the location and IP address of name owners anonymous (if used with Tor), but the various activities of name owners can be linked by an attacker. This should be improved, e.g. by implementing Zerocoin.
Better blockchain privacy
Some name owners may wish their records to not be publicly accessible; encryption would improve this situation.
Decentralized website single sign-on
Namecoin can be used to log into websites in a secure way without needing a password (protecting people from database leaks or cracked passwords without trusting a third party such as "all your data are belong to us" systems like Facebook); this is implemented as the NameID library by domob. Unfortunately, this library is not easy for non-programmers to integrate with existing websites. Plugins should be created for major website backends such as Drupal, phpBB, WordPress, and SMF, to allow trust-free NameID sign-on to be as easy as checking a box.
Automated builds
Namecoin software should support automated builds and testing so that our developers and testers can work more efficiently. The builds should also be deterministic (as Bitcoin and Tor are doing) to improve security.
Offline signing of static websites
Verifying signatures of static websites against the blockchain would prevent hijacking even if a web server is completely compromised.
SSH client integration
Log into your servers remotely without trusting your network or manually verifying fingerprints, using the same anti-hijacking features that FreeSpeechMe first implemented.

Upgrading and downgrading

How to Upgrade
If you are running an older version, shut it down. Wait until it has completely
shut down (which might take a few minutes for older versions), then run the
installer (on Windows) or just copy over /Applications/Bitcoin-Qt (on Mac) or
bitcoind/bitcoin-qt (on Linux).
Downgrading warning
Because release 0.10.0 makes use of headers-first synchronization and parallel
block download (see further), the block files and databases are not
backwards-compatible with older versions of Bitcoin Core or other software:
  • Blocks will be stored on disk out of order (in the order they are
received, really), which makes it incompatible with some tools or
other programs. Reindexing using earlier versions will also not work
anymore as a result of this.
  • The block index database will now hold headers for which no block is
stored on disk, which earlier versions won't support.
If you want to be able to downgrade smoothly, make a backup of your entire data
directory. Without this your node will need start syncing (or importing from
bootstrap.dat) anew afterwards. It is possible that the data from a completely
synchronised 0.10 node may be usable in older versions as-is, but this is not
supported and may break as soon as the older version attempts to reindex.
This does not affect wallet forward or backward compatibility.
Notable changes

Faster synchronization
Bitcoin Core now uses 'headers-first synchronization'. This means that we first
ask peers for block headers (a total of 27 megabytes, as of December 2014) and
validate those. In a second stage, when the headers have been discovered, we
download the blocks. However, as we already know about the whole chain in
advance, the blocks can be downloaded in parallel from all available peers.
In practice, this means a much faster and more robust synchronization. On
recent hardware with a decent network link, it can be as little as 3 hours
for an initial full synchronization. You may notice a slower progress in the
very first few minutes, when headers are still being fetched and verified, but
it should gain speed afterwards.
A few RPCs were added/updated as a result of this:
  • getblockchaininfo now returns the number of validated headers in addition to
the number of validated blocks.
  • getpeerinfo lists both the number of blocks and headers we know we have in
common with each peer. While synchronizing, the heights of the blocks that we
have requested from peers (but haven't received yet) are also listed as
'inflight'.
  • A new RPC getchaintips lists all known branches of the block chain,
including those we only have headers for.
Transaction fee changes
This release automatically estimates how high a transaction fee (or how
high a priority) transactions require to be confirmed quickly. The default
settings will create transactions that confirm quickly; see the new
'txconfirmtarget' setting to control the tradeoff between fees and
confirmation times. Fees are added by default unless the 'sendfreetransactions'
setting is enabled.
Prior releases used hard-coded fees (and priorities), and would
sometimes create transactions that took a very long time to confirm.
Statistics used to estimate fees and priorities are saved in the
data directory in the fee_estimates.dat file just before
program shutdown, and are read in at startup.
New command line options for transaction fee changes:
  • -txconfirmtarget=n : create transactions that have enough fees (or priority)
so they are likely to begin confirmation within n blocks (default: 1). This setting
is over-ridden by the -paytxfee option.
  • -sendfreetransactions : Send transactions as zero-fee transactions if possible
(default: 0)
New RPC commands for fee estimation:
  • estimatefee nblocks : Returns approximate fee-per-1,000-bytes needed for
a transaction to begin confirmation within nblocks. Returns -1 if not enough
transactions have been observed to compute a good estimate.
  • estimatepriority nblocks : Returns approximate priority needed for
a zero-fee transaction to begin confirmation within nblocks. Returns -1 if not
enough free transactions have been observed to compute a good
estimate.
RPC access control changes
Subnet matching for the purpose of access control is now done
by matching the binary network address, instead of with string wildcard matching.
For the user this means that -rpcallowip takes a subnet specification, which can be
  • a single IP address (e.g. 1.2.3.4 or fe80::0012:3456:789a:bcde)
  • a network/CIDR (e.g. 1.2.3.0/24 or fe80::0000/64)
  • a network/netmask (e.g. 1.2.3.4/255.255.255.0 or fe80::0012:3456:789a:bcde/ffff:ffff:ffff:ffff:ffff:ffff:ffff:ffff)
An arbitrary number of -rpcallow arguments can be given. An incoming connection will be accepted if its origin address
matches one of them.

Using wildcards will result in the rule being rejected with the following error in debug.log:
 Error: Invalid -rpcallowip subnet specification: *. Valid are a single IP (e.g. 1.2.3.4), a network/netmask (e.g. 1.2.3.4/255.255.255.0) or a network/CIDR (e.g. 1.2.3.4/24). 
REST interface
A new HTTP API is exposed when running with the -rest flag, which allows
unauthenticated access to public node data.
It is served on the same port as RPC, but does not need a password, and uses
plain HTTP instead of JSON-RPC.
Assuming a local RPC server running on port 8332, it is possible to request:
In every case, EXT can be bin (for raw binary data), hex (for hex-encoded
binary) or json.

RPC Server "Warm-Up" Mode
The RPC server is started earlier now, before most of the expensive
intialisations like loading the block index. It is available now almost
immediately after starting the process. However, until all initialisations
are done, it always returns an immediate error with code -28 to all calls.
This new behaviour can be useful for clients to know that a server is already
started and will be available soon (for instance, so that they do not
have to start it themselves).
Improved signing security
For 0.10 the security of signing against unusual attacks has been
improved by making the signatures constant time and deterministic.
This change is a result of switching signing to use libsecp256k1
instead of OpenSSL. Libsecp256k1 is a cryptographic library
optimized for the curve Bitcoin uses which was created by Bitcoin
Core developer Pieter Wuille.
There exist attacks[1] against most ECC implementations where an
attacker on shared virtual machine hardware could extract a private
key if they could cause a target to sign using the same key hundreds
of times. While using shared hosts and reusing keys are inadvisable
for other reasons, it's a better practice to avoid the exposure.
OpenSSL has code in their source repository for derandomization
and reduction in timing leaks that we've eagerly wanted to use for a
long time, but this functionality has still not made its
way into a released version of OpenSSL. Libsecp256k1 achieves
significantly stronger protection: As far as we're aware this is
the only deployed implementation of constant time signing for
the curve Bitcoin uses and we have reason to believe that
libsecp256k1 is better tested and more thoroughly reviewed
than the implementation in OpenSSL.

Watch-only wallet support
The wallet can now track transactions to and from wallets for which you know
all addresses (or scripts), even without the private keys.
This can be used to track payments without needing the private keys online on a
possibly vulnerable system. In addition, it can help for (manual) construction
of multisig transactions where you are only one of the signers.
One new RPC, importaddress, is added which functions similarly to
importprivkey, but instead takes an address or script (in hexadecimal) as
argument. After using it, outputs credited to this address or script are
considered to be received, and transactions consuming these outputs will be
considered to be sent.
The following RPCs have optional support for watch-only:
getbalance, listreceivedbyaddress, listreceivedbyaccount,
listtransactions, listaccounts, listsinceblock, gettransaction. See the
RPC documentation for those methods for more information.
Compared to using getrawtransaction, this mechanism does not require
-txindex, scales better, integrates better with the wallet, and is compatible
with future block chain pruning functionality. It does mean that all relevant
addresses need to added to the wallet before the payment, though.
Consensus library
Starting from 0.10.0, the Bitcoin Core distribution includes a consensus library.
The purpose of this library is to make the verification functionality that is
critical to Bitcoin's consensus available to other applications, e.g. to language
bindings such as [python-bitcoinlib](https://pypi.python.org/pypi/python-bitcoinlib) or
alternative node implementations.
This library is called libbitcoinconsensus.so (or, .dll for Windows).
Its interface is defined in the C header [bitcoinconsensus.h](https://github.com/bitcoin/bitcoin/blob/0.10/src/script/bitcoinconsensus.h).
In its initial version the API includes two functions:
  • bitcoinconsensus_verify_script verifies a script. It returns whether the indicated input of the provided serialized transaction
correctly spends the passed scriptPubKey under additional constraints indicated by flags
  • bitcoinconsensus_version returns the API version, currently at an experimental 0
The functionality is planned to be extended to e.g. UTXO management in upcoming releases, but the interface
for existing methods should remain stable.
Standard script rules relaxed for P2SH addresses
The IsStandard() rules have been almost completely removed for P2SH
redemption scripts, allowing applications to make use of any valid
script type, such as "n-of-m OR y", hash-locked oracle addresses, etc.
While the Bitcoin protocol has always supported these types of script,
actually using them on mainnet has been previously inconvenient as
standard Bitcoin Core nodes wouldn't relay them to miners, nor would
most miners include them in blocks they mined.
bitcoin-tx
It has been observed that many of the RPC functions offered by bitcoind are
"pure functions", and operate independently of the bitcoind wallet. This
included many of the RPC "raw transaction" API functions, such as
createrawtransaction.
bitcoin-tx is a newly introduced command line utility designed to enable easy
manipulation of bitcoin transactions. A summary of its operation may be
obtained via "bitcoin-tx --help" Transactions may be created or signed in a
manner similar to the RPC raw tx API. Transactions may be updated, deleting
inputs or outputs, or appending new inputs and outputs. Custom scripts may be
easily composed using a simple text notation, borrowed from the bitcoin test
suite.
This tool may be used for experimenting with new transaction types, signing
multi-party transactions, and many other uses. Long term, the goal is to
deprecate and remove "pure function" RPC API calls, as those do not require a
server round-trip to execute.
Other utilities "bitcoin-key" and "bitcoin-script" have been proposed, making
key and script operations easily accessible via command line.
Mining and relay policy enhancements
Bitcoin Core's block templates are now for version 3 blocks only, and any mining
software relying on its getblocktemplate must be updated in parallel to use
libblkmaker either version 0.4.2 or any version from 0.5.1 onward.
If you are solo mining, this will affect you the moment you upgrade Bitcoin
Core, which must be done prior to BIP66 achieving its 951/1001 status.
If you are mining with the stratum mining protocol: this does not affect you.
If you are mining with the getblocktemplate protocol to a pool: this will affect
you at the pool operator's discretion, which must be no later than BIP66
achieving its 951/1001 status.
The prioritisetransaction RPC method has been added to enable miners to
manipulate the priority of transactions on an individual basis.
Bitcoin Core now supports BIP 22 long polling, so mining software can be
notified immediately of new templates rather than having to poll periodically.
Support for BIP 23 block proposals is now available in Bitcoin Core's
getblocktemplate method. This enables miners to check the basic validity of
their next block before expending work on it, reducing risks of accidental
hardforks or mining invalid blocks.
Two new options to control mining policy:
  • -datacarrier=0/1 : Relay and mine "data carrier" (OP_RETURN) transactions
if this is 1.
  • -datacarriersize=n : Maximum size, in bytes, we consider acceptable for
"data carrier" outputs.
The relay policy has changed to more properly implement the desired behavior of not
relaying free (or very low fee) transactions unless they have a priority above the
AllowFreeThreshold(), in which case they are relayed subject to the rate limiter.
BIP 66: strict DER encoding for signatures
Bitcoin Core 0.10 implements BIP 66, which introduces block version 3, and a new
consensus rule, which prohibits non-DER signatures. Such transactions have been
non-standard since Bitcoin v0.8.0 (released in February 2013), but were
technically still permitted inside blocks.
This change breaks the dependency on OpenSSL's signature parsing, and is
required if implementations would want to remove all of OpenSSL from the
consensus code.
The same miner-voting mechanism as in BIP 34 is used: when 751 out of a
sequence of 1001 blocks have version number 3 or higher, the new consensus
rule becomes active for those blocks. When 951 out of a sequence of 1001
blocks have version number 3 or higher, it becomes mandatory for all blocks.
Backward compatibility with current mining software is NOT provided, thus miners
should read the first paragraph of "Mining and relay policy enhancements" above.
